This 9 days Rwanda gorilla adventure begins and ends in Kigali. It includes visiting Volcanoes National Park for mountain gorilla trekking adventure and Dian Fossey tombs hike. The landscape in the shadow of the volcanoes is a standout amongst the most amazing in Africa. You will visit Nyungwe Forest National Park for chimpanzee tracking and game drive in Akagera National Park.
Day 1: Arrival in Kigali International Airport
On your arrival at Kigali International Airport, you will be welcomed by your safari guide from Gorilla Expeditions Ltd who will drive you to the hotel in Kigali for relaxation, after lunch, you will have a short city tour to the local markets craft shops. Accommodations options include; Kigali Serena Hotel, Mille Collines Hotel, Chez Lando Hotel.
Day 2: Drive to Volcanoes National Park
After breakfast at the lodge, do some shopping and a visit to Gisozi genocide memorial site and later, drive northwards of Rwanda to Volcanoes National Park. On your arrival at the park, you can choose to have a community stroll for a great cultural experience of real Rwandese culture in Ruhengeri, if time grants. Here, dinner and overnight will be at Mountain Gorilla View Lodge, Le Bambou Lodge or Kinigi Guest House.
Day 3: Gorilla Trekking Volcanoes National Park
Have a morning breakfast at the lodge and drive to the park headquarters of Volcanoes National Park for a short briefing before entering the forest for gorilla trekking. After this, you will be accompanied by the experienced ranger guide and penetrate into the forest in search for these rare and endangered Mountain Gorillas. The time spends in the jungle tracking for the Gorillas is not predictable as it always depends on the where these gentle giants spend the most recent night and their movement in search for food. After coming across the mountain gorillas, you will have one hour in their presence while taking photographs, watching their conduct and feeding patterns. Thereafter you will return back to the park headquarters as you watch other primate species in the jungle. Come back to the lodge for unwinding and if time permits have a scenic drive to the twin lakes Burera and Ruhondo. Dinner and overnight will be at your lodge as on day two.
Day 4: Dian Fossey Grave Hike
In the morning after breakfast at the lodge, you enjoy an adventurous trek to Karisoke Gorilla Research Centre which Dian Fossey, the famous primatologist set up in her battle to protect the rare and endeared mountain gorilla in Volcanoes National Park Rwanda, a voluntary project was formed called; Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund International. It would be ideal if you note that this activity takes a full day. Also here dinner and overnight will be at the lodge as on day two.
Day 4: Transfer to Nyungwe Forest National Park
This morning after breakfast, you will hit the road along the shores of Lake Kivu to Nyungwe Forest National Park. You will have an en-route visit to Kibuye town found on the shores of Lake Kivu for fantastic views. Have lunch and later continue to Cyangugu town which is on the southern shore of Lake Kivu and likewise a gateway to Nyungwe Forest National Park. You will arrive at Nyungwe Forest in the night in time for dinner and overnight at Nyungwe Forest Lodge / Nyungwe Top View Hill Hotel / Gisakura Guest House.
Day 5: Chimpanzee Tracking Nyungwe Forest National Park
Have an early morning breakfast and drive to the park headquarters of Nyungwe Forest National Park for a short briefing before entering the forest chimpanzee tracking. The activity can take approximately one hour to a full day depending on the movement of chimpanzees in their search for food and shelter. It ought to be specified that it is not guaranteed to see the chimps as they are erratic and can move long distance in one day in search of food and shelter. There are several different primate species in Nyungwe forest which you will also watch, for example, the Rwenzori colobus, Hoest Monkey, silver monkey, owl-faced monkey, red-tailed monkey, vervet monkey, and olive baboon and many others. After this adventurous activity, you will return back to the lodge for lunch and relaxation as you wait for dinner and overnight at the lodge as on day four.
Day 6: Return to Kigali
This morning after breakfast you will transfer back to Kigali with an en-rout stopover at the Murambi Genocide Memorial. You may choose to visit the Nyanza Royal Palace. The site shows unique items and pieces of history of the Old Mwami who was the King. Move ahead to Kigali for dinner and overnight at Kigali Serena Hotel, Mille Collines Hotel, Chez Lando Hotel.
Day 7: Drive to Akagera National Park
After breakfast, you will hit the road and transfer to Akagera National Park which is found along the border of Rwanda and Tanzania. After lunch at the Lodge, you will go the evening boat cruise on the Lake Ihema to see the expansive number of hippos, the Nile and many bird species. Return to the lodge for dinner and overnight at Akagera Game Lodge, Dereva Hotel.
Day 8: Game Drive Akagera National Park
After breakfast, you will enjoy morning game drive to search for the large herds of game animals which the national park is well known for and these incorporate; Burchell’s Zebra, lions, elephants, topi, giraffes, impalas and over 425 bird species incorporating the rare shoe billed stock, African jacana. You will return to the lodge for lunch and toward the evening, transfer back to Kigali dinner and overnight will be Kigali Serena Hotel, Mille Collines Hotel, Chez Lando Hotel.
Day 9: Reserved for Departure
Today you will visit the Genocide Memorial and the education center, handicraft markets, the local markets, do last minute shopping and then later transfer to Kigali International Airport to find your departure flight.
