Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

The Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is located in the Virunga Mountains and is adjoining with the Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda. Mgahinga is found approximately 15km, south of the town of Kisoro and over 55km, west of Kabale, the biggest city in the sub-region. The whole park is found in Bufumbira County, in Kisoro District.

The Park is the smallest gorilla park in Uganda with about 33.7km. The park is extremely essential, as it is one of the two parks in Uganda that provides habitat for the endangered Mountain gorilla. The park is in 8 hours drive through Kabale. For those without private transport, there is a daily transport service, which set off at 0700 hours local time. Once in Kisoro town, voyagers can trek or take special hire vehicle to the park entrance. It is likewise possible to travel to Kisoro. Flights could be organized with Eagle Air, which has flights on Mondays and Fridays from Entebbe to Kisoro.

The park was gazetted in 1991 and is a part of the Virunga Conservation Area, which is 434km. The Park encounters two wet rainy seasons; February – May, and September- December of every year. The maximum amount of rainfall in a year is 250mm (October) and Minimum is 10mm (July).

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park sits high in the mists, at an altitude of between 2,227m and 4,127m. As its name prescribes, it was made to secure the endangered mountain gorillas that inhabit its thick forest, and it is likewise an essential habitat for the jeopardized golden monkey.

The park also offers gorilla trekking activities; but activity is unpredictable due to the fact that these gorillas some times move to Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda, because they are in their natural habitat they are free to move, there is also hiking and nature walk in the park which reward you with the view of different wildlife and beautiful landscapes and Mountain/Volcano Climbing in Mgahinga Gorilla is another activity in the park which is done on mount Sibinyo, Mt Mgahiga and Mt Muhavura.
